It's been a long time

I just sold my old laptop for cheep. As I went through some of the old files from a year ago, it felt very weird. It felt like it wasn't my files at all. Yet others brought back good memories.

I was alarmed when I was reminded that all this can be erased almost instantly. Why bother to keep a journal? Is there some kind of non volatile storage that will last? Why would you want it anyway? Who would read it or find interst in it?

More Harry Potter (HP1)

I started listening to book 1. I admit I really enjoy the animated voice of Jim Dale. The books are so much more interesting than the movie. Well, with John Williams’s soundtrack.

Chapter one has a lot of facts I must have missed earlier. Or Mrs. Figg just didn’t register until after hearing all the books.

Harry Potter, or rather the idea of non muggles among us, could become a huge deal. I’d like to hear more about wizards and witches from other countries. In fact, I would like to go to school like Hogwarts.

New toy or Dell: POS?

I can’t get my new toy to connect to the wireless network. I have used the IR extensively. Stupid Dell has the rest of my order in waiting. I’ve been waiting for two weeks!!!

I was able to pull up the scriptures over to my new toy. The application didn’t like the landscape mode.

My iPaq still remains the love of my life. OK, not really. I’m not that pitiful.

Mark My Scriptures

I downloaded the new Church endorsed, hand held scripture reader. I think my brother-in-law made reference to it, but like always, I probably wasn't listening to him.

I like the ability to change the font size. You can mark and annotate these digitized cannon of holy writ. I even paid to register. Share of the wealth!

I'll have to try to bring them over to my new toy if I ever get a chance. There is so much I want to do... work not necessarily being one of them. BUT, it is much better than doing nothing.

Fantasia 2000

I finally saw this and there were some psychedelic cartoons, some good cartoons, and a really funny one involving Donald and Daisy Duck on Noah's Ark.

The flying whales was pretty wacky but it got me thinking how fun it would be to take Corryn to Sea World.

Corryn liked the fountains at the W.W.II Memorial. I think she would like to see whales spouting water not to mention jumping out above the water surface.

I hate computers

OK, for the most part I don't hate computers. I guess it is just the job search I hate.

It's a pain in butt (for me) to get any good work experience in the technology I want to be using and when new stuff comes out, everyone expects you to have years of experience in that too. It's an endless cycle.

Recruiters are even more behind the learning curve. In fact, I dare say they don't have a clue about most of the stuff they are instructed to look for in a candidate.

I told this recruiter off the other day.

He said. "We'll keep you on file and let you know if something comes up that fits your profile."

'''Yeah, I know." I laughed. "I'll never hear from you again."

Nature shows with Corryn

Corryn and I love watching TV programs or movies with animals. I like to point out the all different animals.

Once we were watching this show on Alaska. There was a white bear on the screen. I asked her what kind of bear it was, because I was thinking grizzly but I knew that was not right.

"It's a polar bear." Corryn said.

I was impressed.

I have shown her some crocodiles, rhinoceroses, and hippopotamuses. There were some bears (statues) around DC. I tried to show Corryn what a Panda bear looked like, but my parents were in too much of a hurry.

Net Force

I started to watch this Tom Clancy movie. At first I thought it was really neat, but as the story developed I started to think it was pretty lame.

I laughed at the emotionless, tough guy dialog. That is totally Clancy style.

It was interesting to see all the cool computer tech stuff, but there were too many nuances that mad it just really dumb.

Herndon

I met a Katie Herndon once. I feel like I pretty much introduced her to her husband, an old high school acquaintance, Nathan Forsgren. I am reminded of her when I see Clara on Back to Future III.

Nathan came with the family to a BP summer party to Raging Waters. I one some hard bound Harry Potter books, but I gave them to him because I thought they were kids books.

I met a lady from Herndon, VA. She kind of looked like an elf. She had large, almost pointed ears.

I flew out here for a "interview" once. It was more of an excuse to come out here to visit. Now that I am out here on a fairly permanent basis and more familiar with the area, I avoid job announcements for that area because it is out of the metro area in my opinion.

Poised for a change

Ten hour days? My butt! No posts for a whille?

The RSA interview was a flop, unfortunately.

I got a bunch of stuff from my parents and my aunt. Moving will be a pain when/if that time comes, but the TV and DVD will be nice. Especially when my roommate leaves in August.

She knows

Corryn asked recently why I leave her house all the time. She also asked why I am always at the Potomac Mills mall. This last time I was picked up, after slugging to the mall, she went very silent after her inquiring greeting.

When I pointed out that she was very quite, I noticed that Corryn was unusually focused. For a brief moment I thought she was studying my face. When she reached out and touched the lump above my right cheek, those suspicions were confirmed.

Corryn smiled wryly, and I asked if it felt weird. She agreed. I laughed and took her hand and forced her to touch the plastic piece inserted at the side of my head. I don’t think she realized what it was that I was trying to get her to feel or how weird it is.

Playing hooky

My niece woke me up after I had ignored my alarm on my toy. I spent the night at the Manning house with my parents. We had spent most of the night previous at my Aunts.

Went to the Spy museum and then to my favorite president's building and international trade center for lunch. I had a chicken Philly sandwich.

On the way home, we stopped in at Arlington cemetery for a book.

Best of Mail Call

It has some really great information on these history channel programs. I recently learned about the hierarchy of an army: brigade, squad, patrol...

I also learned about the X-35 an experimental fighter jet for the Navy, Marines, and the Air Force.

The X-45 sounds interesting, but misses something like a fear factor. In Behind Enemy Lines, the conflict in Bosnia seemed hyped up. In some ways, Bosnia like Iraq seems more like a training exercise.

Knowing the Scriptures

I never understood the scripture about false Christ's in the Last Days. I mean who would be stupid enough to pose as Him? Then there was David Koresh.

Another scripture I didn't understand until I was in Morgan City, LA was the one about haters of their own blood.

The Stake Mission President at the time eluded that it was talking about abortion. What respect I gained from just his talk was questioned when he chewed us out after church.

When I caught up with his family in Baton Rouge months later, I had lost all respect for the guy. He was a complete anal cavity. I think the sole reason he chewed us out was because he only had the authority to do so.

Robby Crockett

One of my few childhood friends was Mr. Crockett and one of the even fewer places I spent the night was at Rob's place. I remember distinctly this Dracula movie that was on. Dracula would bite his female victims when they had their shirts off.

Anyway, I think Rob gave me a bunch of baseball cards. I’m sure we played during recess in grade school, but I think that summed up our friendship.

His name came up during my conversation with Jessica Young. I didn't remember talking to him for years before that. How could he know what was going on in my life?

I ran into Rob when I was on Utah last. He's been married for a couple years and plans on moving to Wyoming.

Season 1 of 24

I started watching these about a few weeks ago. It's all right. The parts where the TV splits into several different areas, like multiple cameras, bugs me.

In order to do this real time effect, they are on the phone as they travel. Everyone is up for more than 24 hours?

Seems like everyone is pretty deceitful and everyone is against everyone else. By the end of the 4 episodes on the second DVD, I was in fast forward mode. There was a reason I never watched when it was aired.

Sunburned

Erin, an attractive young PR intern from Logan Utah, caught up with me first. We talked for a while because Dave was a bit late.

I jokingly said Dave worked for the President because the shirt he was wearing had the Presidential Seal on it. It was the first time I’d meet him too.

We all walked around for a while, toured two of the three boats, then Erin left. I was torn with the urge to go with her and my other plans. Dave and I got a canoe and went out for a while. It was scary. I hate water and yet I love the old wooden ships?

I left Dave and walked along the dock behind the torpedo factory. Someone had a nice yacht and I saw the sailing tall ship up close. OK it was about 200 feet awry as it sailed by.

I was reminded that there is a ferry to Mount Vernon from there. The ferry covers the entrance fee as well. I was going to go last year, but I learned about the ferry after the summer was over…

I ate at this Pizza place on King Street. After which, I went to the movies to watch Around the World in 80 Days. It was a silly movie, but I knew it was going to be before I went in.

Here is a picture of one of the boats. I'm going back with Erin and Dave in a few hours. Should be fun.

My parents fly in tonight. I belive we are all going to to the Spy Museum tommorrow. That should be fun too.

What do you see?

One of the new games Corryn and I play is when she will draw/scribble something and ask “What do you see? “

It’s pretty fun. I wonder if she is trying to psycho analyze me.

I had to talk to a psychologist once. I honestly thought it was expensive conversation. I filled his head with bull crap until I couldn’t stand going there anymore -- what a waste of time. I knew I was crazy before I was forced to go there.

Torpedo factory

Gary and I went to go see the ships we thought they were to be sailing around. We only saw two ships and they were both docked. We quickly walked through the old torpedo factory on the way back to work.

When I tired of listening to book 5 I decided to take a longer bus route – that is “ra” and “out” together – and I am glad I did. I remembered I could use a hair cut. There was the Hair Cuttery, and right next store an ice cream shop where I treated myself.

Later that night I went to the Landmark Mall to price some suit coats. I doubt I would wear it because it was so humid today… When I walked outside, it was raining pretty hard. I felt bad for all the people going through a drought. It seems like we have plenty of water here.

Flatus bag

On one of the memorable trips home from the U, my Dad and I played a game by calling each other names. These were creative names. It went on for a while before we started to repeat names.

Anyway, he called me a flatus bag.

"A what?" I asked. "A fart catcher?"

Doing service at a hospital in Picayune, MS l learned that he wasn't making them up. I busted up laughing when I was stacking up inventory and came across them.

Skyler's swim lesson

I was impressed with the changes made at Scera pool. I remember going there when was a kid.

The Scera brings back a lot of memories: the summer outdoor shows, the sticky floor in the old theatre, to the second grade.

I am thinking Corryn would also enjoy the kids’ pool as much or more than Skyler did.

Nice mattress

Often at night I have been disoriented; lost in this queen-sized bed. I have enjoyed this mattress I burrowed from the Manning’s. I wish I could get it to hover in the air so I can get more room in this “cell”. Right now it is just on the floor.

It is quite comfortable and it is the largest bed l have slept in. Well, on a long term basis. I have always had a Queen or so at hotels and such.

Fireworks

Last year Corryn was scared by the Fourth of July fireworks. On our way to Florida, a bunch was purchased. I'm not sure what became of all those, but I am quite hopeful she is not bothered with them this year.

About a month ago, Corryn said ''fire works" as She got in the car. It was in the middle of the day so I was curious about what she was referring too.

On the window was some bird droppings. Each drop (explosion) had a long stem-like stream which had run down the window. What an imagination!

Ronald Reagan

This is a rather late post, but I recently went back though some old posts and noticed a post on a carrier commissioned about the same date as the memorial date June 11.

Other important events on that date. Today in history was quite interesting as well.

I thought it was funny that this calendar said the in Libya it was a National Day. I wonder of ot has anything to do with Reagan.

Not sure what kind of change of would best suit this feeling. A girlfriend would be nice, a change of scenery is possible because I might have to or I want to move by November.

1 world keno to like to go back to Utah. I love the mountains. Going back though wouldn't be much of a change. So, scratch that idea.

A new job might be cool. I kind of wish l could work for Advantage Home Appraisal full time. But I guess it is better that l do not.

I miss Corryn already

As we watched Peter Pan, I mentioned that I thought the Indian girl was cute. "She has darker skin than you." I said.

"Skin?" Corryn asked. The word was not in her vocabulary.

"Yes skin. You have beautiful white skin."

"Where is my skin?"

I touched her nose and then her forehead. Corryn tried to cover her face and by so doing revealed her belly button.

"Right here and here” I said as I touched her stomach and her feet. “Skin. Skin. Skin.”

Patroling the surrounding’ hills

Taken from the story. I haven’t done a good Rosco post in a while, so why not go to the source?

About fifteen of us were on a patrol in the surrounding’ hills. I was carrying my usual amount of medical supplies. Along with that I was also carrying two or three boxes of ammunition. My line of thinking in carrying the extra load was, the more fire—power there was between me and the NVA or VC the better. At any rate, I was carrying almost l00 pounds of equipment. And after walking most of that day through hot sticky jungle, I was needless to say, getting tired; very hot and very tired.

Moving slowly down into a ravine, the patrol suddenly came across a stream and everyone started to jump in. I stopped just long enough to remove my equipment. The normally crystal clear stream had become a little muddy by all the splashing but no one seemed to have taken any notice. The water looked too cool to even care. Still standing on the bank of the stream, I bent over to get a drink when I felt’ a foot In back of me and then a hard push. Falling face first into the water and mud I heard a shot. My heart started racing as my first thoughts were that we had been ambushed. Quickly I jumped out of the stream and looked back to see Rosco standing with his rifle pointing down at a pit viper, a highly poisonous snake, green and about eighteen inches long. It was laying next to where I had been standing cut in two by Rosco’s bullet.

Melia

Yeah, I think it is a funny name. Honestly though, at first I though Corryn was a funny name too.

Anyway, I am getting kind of anxious to be around another cute niece. Hopefully, she is as cute and smart as Corryn. Ah, she’ll be all good.

Here is a picture I had taken of the Mannings in Utah prior to Corryn’s birth.

Stand for something

The trouble with slugging is that you have to deal with people. In this case, the drivers choice of entertainment was the issue

The deviant guy on the radio was talking about a home made porn video he just watched. I wasn't sure which was more disgusting: The deviant guy and the lady talking about the video, the driver of the car for listening to such crap, or the women that made the video.

Lucky for me, my faithful toy was operable and I was able to read to take my mind of the subject. Once on the Interstate, the noise of the car drowned out the rest. At times like these, I'm glad I don't hear very well.

At the end of the ride, I heard him say "I'm not a bad guy..." a phrase I have often said to justify myself. In a conversation I had at work, I learned the possible identity of this pervert. I was disgusted I kind of "felt" sorry for the guy.

If Stern is a good guy, then I must be a Saint. Sadly, I wonder if he is not the deviant but the norm. I really don’t want to know.

Michael time

I wasn't really sure how to take that response. I just wanted to watch a movie? One I had seen so many times before.

It got too quite after a while, so I went looking for my niece who was told to leave me a alone because I needed some Michael time?

The Manning family was all out on the deck painting picture frames. Corryn had her hair up in a cute pony tail. It felt awkward to intrude on them, and even more so when I was asked to join.

I have a backlog of pending blog posts. This repository now extends to three computers, not to mention several paper notes. Actually, only two computers. When I sat down to sync up, my faithful toy needed to reboot. Hopefully not much was lost.

Oh well, one day I'll be able to digitally store these posts in my head and sync them to any media.

Brood X is gone?

Last time I walked down the trail I was freaked out because the noise was so loud. Yesterday I went down the same path and the bugs were hardly audible.

Good! I only pulled 3 off me during the whole invasion. Discussing little creatures!

It really wasn’t that bad. Again the media suckered me in to believing what they wanted me to believe.

Troll

There is this giant troll that lives at my parent’s house. I thought I had a picture of it, but I didn’t find it.

Corryn never lilted it, but she doesn’t like dogs either. I don’t blame her; I hate dogs myself.

Oakley thought it was cool. He grabbed its nose and started shaking it.

Skyler didn't seem to be bothered by it either.

I heard Taylor was playing the piano once and he stopped for a moment. When his Dad went to check on him, it was discovered that a towel had been wrapped around the troll’s head.

"Why did you do that?"

"He kept staring at me."

I am a sucker

I stopped by a GQ store because I noticed a nice yellow/cream dress shirt. The shirt was way too expensive. I did see a nice suit with a good price, but I didn’t buy it.

Then I went to my favorite store. I saw a bunch of junk and I bought it. Too many Crunch bars… Just can’t leave them alone!

I just ordered a wireless 802.11g hub. Now I can post junk from the living room while eating all my junk food!

New toy post

This is the first post from my new toy. I had to port it to my trusty old toy via IR - which was my first succesful beam.

From there it was uploaded to my desktop. All these steps ensure that grammar and spelling mistakes are caught.

It will be cool just to post directly. I mean I already have a spell checker on board!

There is a lot of cool features on my toy, but there are a few things that really bug me. I guess I just need get used to it, or find the setting.

I like this transcriber input stuff. The landscape view is really neat too. Some buttons or pen clicks don't respond as I would expect though.

Harry Potter Week

I have been listening to book 3. I saw the movie Monday. I was talking to a coworker today and I was quite surprised he was such a fan. Of course, he denied it by saying he just liked to read a lot.

I got my new toy today. Well, the most important part of the shipment. Now, or once I get a cradle, I can put Harry Potter on that.

I’ll need to get a wireless hub for here. I was glad my toy (Pocket Word) has a spellchecker.

Rain

Why does it always hare to rain over the weekend? It just seems that it has every time I have gone down to Woodbridge.

I hate waiting for good weather as much as I hate waiting for a late bus. Ok, that was a lie. I can’t do much about the rain, but if I had my own car, I wouldn’t give a bus a second thought.

It was warmer Sunday morning when Corryn and I took a walk. Why she has to run all the time? Of course, she falls and our fun walk is over. Oh well, maybe next time.

Friends do stuff together

The General called right after the plane landed. He had the key to the small arms locker.

I was impressed, but on the morning we went shooting the AK-47, I was disappointed with the lack of logistics planning. We didn't have any ammo!

It actually was more fun that we waited for his sister's family after looking all over for about 200 rounds. They had more guns and the kids were fun to be around.

Board Games

I tried to get Taylor to play this race car board game. I remember playing this when I was a kid. I wanted to scan in one of the little license plates, but figured I would only loose the piece.

I guess Taylor was too young to play or understand. He basically cheated to win.

There were a couple games I didn't recognize in the closet. I wondered why these games where ever bought. I never played them, but that doesn't mean a whole lot.

Elder Mailman

Well that should have been his real name. Workman just didn't seem to
fit.

I swear this “lance corporal” in the Marine Corps spent more time involved with his mail than he did with the missionary work he was called to do.

We had some interesting experiences out and about Oakdale, LA.

High Priest group

I went to this class because I heard my Dad was teaching. There were three dates on the board. Two dated back to about the time of the Vietnam War.

Monday, February 5, 199O was the third date.

On no, I thought. Maybe coming to this class wasn't the greatest of ideas.

It actually went pretty well. Dad sounded kind of impressed when I responded that I remembered the date.

Shadow Warriors

I bought this Tom Clancy, non-fiction book on CD. It has been very interesting.

I recently bought Truman G. Madsen lectures on CD as well. I first heard these lectures on Joseph Smith, the Prophet in Louisiana.

I brought the Teachings of the Prophet on CD with me from Utah. Listening to books on CD or digitized from CD is really convenient.

HP3, the movie

The book was tons better. It was pretty obvious there was a new director. The artistic look and fell of the move, if you will, wasn’t the same. Different is good.

Several times during the movie I was saying to myself that is was just terrible. I knew the movie had to mix up the story a bit, because there was so much to take from. I guess I didn’t agree with how some of it was done. There were however, some awesome, unexpected scenes.

If anything, the movie encouraged me to start listening to the book again.

The Dirt Hill

There was an undeveloped area not far from my parents’ house. There was a large mound of dirt that the locals would ride their bikes on.

One summer a bunch of new houses were constructed. The beloved play ground was destroyed.

The Orem 5th ward boundary was once described as a cherry. If my Dad lived in the pit and the Barton’s on the stem, then the Jones family was the worm that burrowed in and ruined the fruit.

Fight Right

Rosco pulled up a chair next to Doc. “So,“ he started. “What does this Mormon book say about war? I mean I figure you are here so the Church doesn’t denounce it.”

“Funny flat you ask.” Doc replied. “I just read about this Captain Moroni.”

“Same guy that visited Joe Smith?”

“No different guy. Anyway, it said that God commands that we protect our life, liberty and what not even unto bloodshed!"

“Almost sounds like part of the Declaration of Independence. Con I burrow the book. I went or see this.”

Afterburner video arcade game

I used to steal quarters from my grandma to play this and other games. On the second floor of Iron Blossom, Snowbird resort was a little game room.

The F-14 Tomcat is a very nice plane. I liked to “fly” it. 1 love this plane I wish I could fly one for real. I had to shoot a couple enemy planes just so I could fly longer on the arcade.

I’d like to fly an F-22 Raptor too. They are sweet looking planes.

DrawTestCE

Ever since I ordered my new toy, I have noticed how much my current toy will still be useful.

For one, I have all my scriptures, hymns, and what not already installed. The books are backed up on a CD in Utah. I might be able to just pull them off this toy.

I wrote a simple drawing test called DrawTesteCE. It basically will draw a rounded box with a random solid fill color on a mouse or pen click. The test was ported to Windows CE or Pocket PC.

I never would have guessed Corryn would like it so much. I would like to write a .Net version for my new toy.

Ages of Kings

The only computer games I ever really got into were Ages of Empires I & II.

I stopped playing because I started lose more than I would win. There was no real way to ensure peace via diplomacy -- which was probably the intent of the game.

I also disliked the lack of business sense. I had to micro manage everything. I could not empower some Al guy to manage food production or my military. My favorite parts of the games were the wooden boats and all the exploration to be had of new areas.

Judge not?

If it is a correct translation then could it not be supposed that if one judges not at all, one will not be judged at all? So it wouldn’t matter what you do? As long as you believe and judge not, you will be saved - no questions asked?

Unfortunately, subconsciously people make judgment calls all the time. Whether or not these judgments are made public is a different matter.

A more correct translation would be to make righteous judgments.

I just ordered my birthday present. It wasn't a laptop, desktop, or a Tablet PC.

My old Compaq iPaq has served me well for the last 3-4 years, but I am getting a new one finally. Well, it is a Dell. This one has a built in wireless network card among other cool stuff.

King Normad

This was my title for a while. The only day I did not receive tribute was on Sundays. I guess that was all good though.

I have often wondered what it would have been like to be a King during the Middle Ages. I like to think I would have been a good King but there are times I wonder about that. If it was a sure thing I could crush my enemy I think I would spare no expense to wipe them out rather than look for some peaceful solution.

Catholic mass at DCA

I attended in this inter faith chapel (a room at the airport) I thought it was alright; it sure keeps you on your toes. I mean with all the audience participation.

I honestly did not feel anything pleasant until after I left and caught the end of the WWII memorial dedication. The national anthem was being sung; I love the message of the song. What a feeling that brings!

Why I like BYU

I have met several good people who went or was going to the Y. Unfortunately I have met the few who would turn me from the place forever more. Sad, it only takes a couple jerks to screw it up for everyone.

The campus is nice and smoke free. That was a big difference from what I found at the U. I never thought a degree in Book of Mormon studies was all that essential. I didn’t like you are required to take all these religion classes, but what do expect from a Church owned school?

I have a lot of great memories of cougar football. My interest left more or less when Ty Detmer did. I found my 5th grade girlfriend on the gymnastics team there once. Too bad I screwed that one up too.

It can be a good conversational piece. People ask me if I went there because I grew up in Utah.

Fast flight

Back to the 1960’s timeline. In 1962 there was a jet that flew from LA to Atlanta in 3 hours? Why are they flying so slow now? It takes about 5 hours to go from DCA to SLC.

What happened to Pan-Am?

I want to research this a bit. From Delta’s Sky magazine, I noticed that in 1964 Delta and Pan-Am “interchange” service to Europe. (See the timeline at the bottom of the page.)

In a lot of movies Pan-Am is this huge glamorous company that everyone wants to work for… Now, where in the world are they? Oh, here they are. Hmm, not so glamorous now?

Delta is 75 years old? Cool, they started in Monroe, LA. It was out of my missiuon boundaries, but there was a girl in my Dad’s BYU ward from there. I tried to pick up on her I’m sure, but like with every futile attempt it probably went nowhere that is why I don’t recall more than that she was in that student ward.

3 Nephews

Well, they are not Huey, Dewey and Louie but I will claim the title of Uncle Scrooge.

I had lots of fun with my nephews, but I admit they did not compare to my niece (give them a few years perhaps.) I mean just look at her, is she not the cutest?

Anyway, Taylor is fun to wrestle with when he isn’t whimpering away from me. He went looking for me all the time although I didn’t allow him to drag me around. Maybe I should have just played along.

Oakley doesn’t talk much either. Well, he is younger. Last I saw him he was not walking on his own. I became his friend when I would give him part of my cookie!

It was a nice change to hold 15 pound Skyler. You just got to be more careful with this guy; Taylor can take and give quite a beating. Not that anyone got hurt; he is just a tough little boy when he wants to.

Back in Blue?

I just got back about an hour ago. It was a blast for the most part. I tried to record short reminders along the way so I could make some interesting posts.

I could have left with less luggage and what not, but what little I did bring was pretty much doubled for the return flight. I picked up some Christmas presents and stuff. Among this, a cool blue dress shirt!

Anyway, I ate at Cheers Bar in the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International airport! That was pretty awesome.

I was kind of shocked how few passengers I saw. On each flight, I was the only one on my section of the row.
