Corryn’s First Movie Experience
I just got finished reading Lileks account of his Christmas week. Read each day. This link starts on Monday and you can read the whole thing. It takes about 30 minutes or so but its worth it.
I got up at 5:20 MST this morning. Since that is 7:20 at the Manning house I get to feel like I’ve slept in even though I’m up before 5:30 AM! Nice. It is going to be hard to get used to the time change when we get home.
Things have been fun. The Salt Lake valley got the storm of the decade yesterday. Of course Utah valley’s storm was less than spectacular so all we got was enough moisture to freeze on the roads and sidewalks and make everything very slippery. It was a fun day though. Christmas was fun too. I joined in with the Damron family tradition of going to catch a movie on Christmas Day. We saw Peter Pan. I think I liked it. I know Corryn liked what she saw of it.
Corryn has never been to a movie in a movie theater before. Her only experience with anything close was seeing shows at Disney World a couple months ago. I know she still remembers spending 30-40 minutes with her head buried in my shoulder as we saw the “World Of Energy” show at Epcot.
She wasn’t excited to go see a movie because of those memories. She started to warm up to the whole experience as the previews played. Her grip on me losened as she watched preivews for other kids movies that are coming soon. I was starting to think this was going to work out ok. Then they showed a preview for what I thought looked like the dumbest movie ever. It is destined to be a crappy movie that only a dozen people will ever see but the preview was loud and scary for kids. Corryn buried her head in my chest and refused to look at the screen even when that preview was over and they played more kid movie previews. She wouldn’t look at the screen when the movie started…and in fact she was asleep about 15 minutes into the movie.
Who is the moron who decided this preview should be in a kids movie. He should be beaten senseless.
She slept for about an hour then woke up and heard someone in the movie mention the name “Tinkerbell”. This peaked her interest (the only thing she knows about Tinkerbell is that she is the little fairy who flies around the Disney logo before her Disney movies. Whenever that happens she likes to yell, “Tinkerbell!!!” I don’t know how that got started but it is pretty fun). She still wouldn’t look at the screen but she had her eyes open and she was clearly listening. Then she heard the sound of Tinkerbell flying and she peaked at the screen. She quickly looked back at my shirt but then she began to slowly start trying to pay attention to what was going on in the movie. She’d watch it for 30 seconds then turn away when anything slightly loud would happen.
After about 5 minutes of this cautious style of movie watching she fell into the zone. You know…the zombie eyed gap jawed fixation that falls over someone when they are captivated by some entertainment form? For the next 45 minutes or so she watched the movie and LOVED it.
As soon as it was over she looked at me and said, “Daddy, that movie was GREAT!!!”
Awesome. I’m glad we waited to take Corryn to a movie until she was old enough to get what the point of the whole experience was. It took her a little while to get it…but it was clear that she does get it and she LOVES it!
It will still be a while before I can get her to go see Return Of The King with me though. Oh well.
