My Favorite Ronald Reagan Comment
“I give him full credit for unleashing the vast right-wing conspiracy.”

Amen to that…and thank goodness.
The first time in my life I realized that I was really going to be interested in political theory and public policy was when I heard Ronald Reagan’s farewell address. I was almost 16 and for some reason I was driving our old ‘81 blue Subaru Station wagon on I-84 between Mtn. Green and Morgan…(I had my learner’s permit). Reagan spoke with great enthusiasm and love for America that stuck with me and I wanted to believe everything he said. I have a little more life experience now and I still haven’t had that optimism shaken from me…even after a 5 year stint at the State Department. I hope I don’t.
A little while after that I found some books buried in a box in the basement that helped me further along the path to my more Libertarian beliefs…but we’ll save Ayn Rand for another post.
Ronald Reagan was the greatest American president of the 20th century. They say that any former president who passes warrants a state funeral with all the trappings like Reagan is being honored with. In my mind this would all seem somewhat cheap and crass if Carter or Ford were being honored.
I cant imagine how it all this would seem if it were William Jefferson Clinton who we were honoring. The nation would need to take a long shower after everything was over just to start feelign almost clean. When he goes we should just throw a big week long keggar in Hope Arkansas I’m sure we could get Hooters to cater the event.
