Questions for Judge Roberts

A lot of people are upset that Roberts will almost certainly follow the precedent set by earlier nominees to the surpreme court of not answering questions posed to them in their Senate confirmation hearings regarding their interpretation of the Constitution. I am among those people.

I wish 6 Republican senators would realize the importance of their responsibility and tell the President that this tradition is over…that they won’t vote for Roberts if he doesn’t answer all questions posed to him in his confirmation hearings. If this were to happen the Senate could be more than the grumpy rubber stamp it will most certainly be for Roberts, it could truely perform is function of advise and consent.

Update:

Here are some awesome questions Roberts should be required to answer. To bad he’d dodge these the same as he is dodging the questions that the baby killers pro-abortion senators want him to answer.

Update 2:

It turns out that a lot of the credit for these “learn nothing about the prospective justice” confirmation hearings goes to one of my least favorite Senators. Thanks again Orrin.

  1. Have you been watching the hearings? Are you disappointed by how Roberts answered the questions? I haven’t watched all of it and it is a cop out to say that he needs a real case with arguments made on both sides, but it is an honest cop out.

From what I’ve seen Roberts is far smarter than the people questioning him.

  2. I agree with you…but there was never any question that someone qualified to be nominated as a justice to the Supreme Court would be smarter than 90% of the senate. I also agree with you that Roberts is taking the smartest way out and that he is being completely honest. I’d try to avoid answering the questions too…especially the questions he’ll be asked about the commerce clause. If he were to say what I think he truly believes about how that part of the Constitution has been abused to the detriment of American citizens he’d be demonized by the loonies on the left and the right.
That said, a great disservice was done to our country by those senators from both parties who let Ginsberg and other justices go through their confirmation hearings without being required to address their understanding of what the Constitution means. The idea that we have to watch someone obtain a seat on that all powerful court without ever hearing how they plan on interpreting the constitution is scary and dumb.

  3. Of course, there are too many Americans who just don’t care what happens… and we are now reaping the “benefits” of that.
