I’m a Democrat
Last Friday I traded my Virginia Commonwealth driver license for a State of Utah license. It was a relatively silly process where I had to re-take the written driver test but was given the benefit of an open book. I also registered to vote…as a Democrat.
I think people like me who are small “l” libertarians and who live in Utah have much more in common with the Democratic party than they do the Republicans. In Utah it is the Democrats for the most part who rely on common sense in their political arguments. It is the Democrats who support keeping the government from interfering with our personal lives and who are the first to resort to arguments for the sanctity of basic human rights when government becomes more intrusive than it should be.
If more Utahns actually considered their alternatives when voting instead of immediately looking for the guy with the (R) behind his name we would all have better representation from our government. One party rule is bad for our state especially when things are as lop-sided in the legislature as they are right now. Bad bills become bad laws and the whole state pays for it in often unforeseen and expensive ways.
A great blog to read if you want to hear what Democrats in Utah are about is Rob Miller’s site (He’s the Utah Democratic Party Vice-Chair). I’ve been reading for the past few weeks and have been pretty well convinced that if you want to hear common sense political arguments in Utah you need to look to the Democrats because there isn’t anything worth listening to right now coming from most party functionaries on the other side.
Some of the people who know me may be a little surprised at my decision. I’ve argued often on this site against the leftist view of things. Those arguments won’t stop. I’m still a small government fiscal conservative. The fact remains however that I’m also socially liberal enough that I don’t really feel comfortable being a Utah Republican. I’ll work over the next little while to better explain my choice and maybe bring a few of you Utahns over to the “dark side” with me
