Yup. Same reason why Brazil as a nation is running on renewable ethanol, and is basically independent of petroleum, and we aren't....

AMEN Cody. I'm sure someone is benefiting from the way they are doing things. I'm pretty sure it isn't the citizens living in Northern Utah...but someone must be benefitting. I know that sounds cynical but there is no other reason I can think of for this to be happening when there are good alternatives like stimulated decay.

It gets more interesting still. In the following story, http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,635203441,00.html
we see a Utah company, among others, who now have the means, but we are not motivated financially or politically, to clean up our mess.

Final question is:
Is it worth $100 billion to create our own basically unlimited supply of clean, Middle-East independent completely green energy?

Someday it will be. Hopefully soon.

If you're interested, here's one possible method for further development. It uses light, and has a biproduct of emitted light.

Check this out....
www.nuclearwasterecycling.com

Stimulated decay. An idea dating back to 1978. Rejected because nobody wants to support it politically. Sounds like a cure to me.
Why are we bickering over where to dump or 'recycle' our nuclear garbage back into people's lives, when we can detoxify it at the nuclear facility? There's a government program that would be worth paying for!

Meh...leave the desert alone...lets move the waste 50 miles south of SLC instead of 50 miles west.

I'm kidding. Seriously.
