A Lame Protest

Tyler Farrer has done a great job covering the Davis County School District protestors and their beef with the school district. I don’t think I was ever sympathetic to their cause but their obnoxiousness directed at anyone within their view while protesting on Monday definitely soured my opinion towards them.
I’ve never thought protests were an effective way of getting anything done. These kids and their parents/chaperones came across as spoiled brats and their enablers…nothing more.
The School District’s closed meetings are questionable public policy but the behavior of these people during their protest helped me understand the District’s desire not to include them in their policy deliberations.
I did find it interesting that many of those participating in the protest seemed to have parked in the Davis Education Association building parking lot. Is the teachers’ union involved in all of this?

Interesting…What would the teachers union have to gain by protesting the boundary change? I think it’s more likely that people don’t respect reserved parking.
Just like people don’t respect a change of boundaries. Any change.

When I first saw the development of boundary changes in Davis, I thought, ‘Well, it finally happened in Davis County.’ It is impossible to have the level of growth that county has seen and not have changes in boundaries. As with any such change, you’ll have those who dislike it. Have heart though, protesters, you’ll never have it as bad as some in Cache Valley, where the districts are misaligned with such a bias that some students are bussed over an hour away, simply because anybody who isn’t a Logan City resident is not good enough to be a ‘Grizzly’.

Tyler,
I doubt that the teacher’s union has anything to gain or lose in the boundary change dispute…I just thought it was weird. It was hard to find a parking spot at the courthouse too so maybe that was the only other place they could find.
Cody,
People can be so lame…but it is hard to believe so many people want to be Darts…Grizzlies I can understand but Darts? I guess we should consider ourselves lucky…we had the coolest mascot of all!

I have a family member newly associated with the ‘Dart’ staff, and his other major complaint besides the name is the school colors. Yellow and brown are unappealing colors easily taken advantage of in dirty underwear jokes.
Still, not as bad as jokes the Morgan Mascot received.
I remember while residing in Apple Valley, California, the parents were voting on changing the HS mascot from the Apple Valley High Sun Devils to ….you guessed it, the apples. Those poor kids. I can see it now, all the moms, ‘But that apple mascot looks SO CUTE!’

And of course no hijacked comment thread moved to discuss weird High School mascots would be complete without an obligatory mention of the Jordan Beetdiggers. I think that might just be even lamer than the Apple Valley High School Apples. Maybe.

Sorry ’bout the hijack…

Hijacks often make comment threads much more interesting in my opinion.
