Socialized Medicine Kills People
Our current healthcare system is broken. It is too expensive and it provides incentives for people to make poor decisions on their own healthcare spending.
Things could be worse…we could be like Canada.

I’ve heard it like this:
Canada: Great place to have cancer, bad place to have a heart attack.
My recollections are about like that. The US has some fantastic trama centers but, for long term care, having an insurance company can only get you in the door. After more than 15 minutes of long term illness, the insurance company starts looking for any and every reason to deny your claim.
I don’t think that the Hospitals are to blame, per se, I think that the medical insurance industry operates in a way that is, at minimum, criminal.

You all should see ‘Sicko’ if you have not. BTW my friends in Canada love their health care in comparison to ours. One reason I switched to eating buffalo a number of years ago. Trying to ward of heart disease. Cooked any buffalo lately Jeremy?

JM,
I agree with you about the insurance industry but I worry that we lay too much of the blame on them and forget about problems with our tort system which amplifies corruption, waste, and fraud throughout the insurance and health care industries.
WP,
I’ll see Sicko when I can rent it. I’m not a huge fan of Moore but some of his arguments are worthy of our attention. Without a doubt our health care system has serious problems. I’m betting he does a pretty good job eviscerating the current system.
Before I turned away from my foolish Republican leanings I detested “Fahrenheit 911″. Now that I’ve come to my senses on Iraq and the “War on Terror” I can see he was correct about a great many things I was wrong about so I’m definitely willing to listen to his thoughts on health care.
I. Love. Buffulo.
I bought some buffalo burger at Smiths two weeks ago and grilled it up along side some 80/20 ground chuck (my standard beef burger fare). They each had a different taste but the buffalo was at least as good as the beef and it had significantly less fat and other bad stuff. I’m a believer. I plan on trying some steaks next.

Sure, Canada’s health care system isn’t perfect. None will be. But until somebody proposes a free-market system which will cover everybody, I’m amenable to a socialized one. After all, we have an obligation to make sure quality health care isn’t a luxury available only to the wealthy.
A non sequitur on food: I’ve never tried buffalo. But I am into culinary experimentation. I’m not a strict vegetarian, but I do try to make as many meals as possible without meat (desite what many Mormons think, the Lord never rescinded the advice in D&C:89:12). Turkey burgers and turkey meatballs are great, and certainly healthier than beef. I also like to try various meat substitutes. I’ve created some very satisfactory hamburger substitutes with legumes and grains. And tempeh works great marinated, fried up, and tossed in a wrap for a great sandwich. I’m hoping that, whatever our ultimate health care system, I’ll reduce my demand on it through healthier eating.
