Some Blog Love

My favorite economist blogger is sending some much deserved praise to my favorite overall blogger. I completely agree with her…Radley Balko’s blog really is probably the most valuable one out there right now. His efforts to catalogue injustices perpetrated by those responsible for maintaining our safety and security are invaluable.

It is cool to read about someone else I respect who is reading and enjoying the same blogs I pay attention too. I check every one of the blogs/websites listed over there on the right hand side of my site on a daily basis. Each one has earned my respect and I’m grateful for the effort they all put into providing me with their ideas and information free of charge! If your bored select one at random and give it a look.

UPDATE 3/18/2008 6:55: While I’m handing out blog love I figured I’d pass out a mention to what is becoming the most consistently entertaining read in the whole Utah bloghive. If you haven’t got Glen Warchol’s blog in your RSS reader you really should put it there. The Trib isn’t paying that guy nearly enough.

  1. Jeremy,
I assume you use a RSS reader to read all of these blog. I was wondering what you use.

Also, are you going to write some reviews of Terry Pratchett books? (In other words, I’d love to read your take on Terry Pratchett books).

  2. Jeremy,
Don’t forget to disclaim that you read all of those blogs/websites listed after 5:00pm!

  3. Daniel,

Bloglines. I’ve used it for years…its the only RSS reader I’ve ever tried.

Yeah…I was thinking about writing something about the Pratchett books I’ve been reading but I’m not a great book reviewer. I’ll see what I can put together.

Did you hear about Pratchett’s early onset Alzheimer’s? Worst news I’ve heard so far this year.

  5. Re Terry Pratchett: Everything except Good Omens is good, and worth reading. Any review beyond that is just fluff .. =)
The premise of Good Omens showed promise, and it started out well, but it lacked the flair of Discworld.

  6. Tom,

I’m reading/listening to all the Discworld books in order and based on what I’ve read so far (I’m on Maskarade) you are absolutely correct about them.

I haven’t read any of Pratchett’s non-Discworld books yet. Thanks for the warning on Good Omens.

  7. Tom,
Good to hear that I’m not alone on Good Omens. I really like Neil Gaiman. I liked Stardust, American Gods, and Anansi Boys. I love Terry Pratchett. It would seem that putting them together could create something really good, but I didn’t care for Good Omens.

As for RSS readers, I tried out a bunch and I’m not in love with any of them. I just Bloglines a couple years ago. I kind of like Google Reader, but I haven’t used it for at least a year. Lately, I’ve been using Netvibes. It’s my current favorite. I just wanted to hear what other people use and like.

  8. Good choice listening to ‘em. I’ve read some, and listened to others. They’re good either way, but the readers they’ve got are generally excellent, and make a good book better. I almost wish I still had a long commute so I could listen more often.

  9. Hello. Just wanted to chime in on Terry Pratchett. I’ve read Discworld through Pyramids–I think Small Gods was my favorite. So funny and ironic.

I actually found Pratchett through his YA series. The first book is Wee Free Men. Also hilarious. This is my favorite Pratchett book, along with Small Gods. It’s set in Disc World, but mostly separate from the main series. So far only a few of the witches are involved with the young heroine of the series. There are 3 books in the series so far and the 2nd is a little weaker, but I highly recommend them if you like YA stuff. I think part of the reason I chose my profession is because I largely prefer YA fiction to contemporary adult fiction.

  10. Utah Teacher,
If you can, you should check out the audio version of the Tiffany Aching series. The voices of the Nac Mac Feegles are great.

Also, I really enjoyed Pratchett’s Bromeliad Trilogy (Truckers, Diggers, and Wings). It’s YA as well and I thought it was fun.

  11. Utah Teacher,

Small Gods is my favorite so far too. I also love the City Watch books.

I haven’t gotten to the Tiffany Aching books yet.

    Tom,

I’ve listened to all but one of the books. Nigel Planer is the best narrator I’ve ever heard.
